BMSB, set to go on !

During the course of 2018, the Australian ministry of agriculture implemented measures concerning the phytosanitary treatment of certain goods, as a defence against a possible invasion of Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs.

Some categories of products were targeted and were to be subjected without fail to “heat treatment”, “methyl bromide” and “sufuryl fluoride fumigation” during the period running from 1st September 2018 to 30 April 2019 (the critical period favourable to contamination).

We will not be able to avoid it this year either! Indeed, the BMSB measure will again come into force as from 1st September 2019 and up till 31 May 2020 (included). This means that all container shipments (comprising goods needing treatment – e.g. barrels) will have to undergo phytosanitary treatment.

As well as Australia, it would seem that New Zealand, a country which already applies BMSB on certain customs nomenclatures, may come to an agreement and copy their neighbours so as to harmonise the procedure.
